Is it a Concept or a Pointer?

You are Brahman” – so say authentic scriptures and masters.

The trouble with this statement is that, for most people, what is hearing this is the ego-self. For that “I” which sees this statement as a concept or a piece of knowledge – this can be confusing, blasphemous, hopeful, or inspiring and gives it more fuel to keep itself going.

Here’s the Truth:

You are not Brahman.
Only Brahman is.

What you see as you and me
Everyone and everything
All that is Brahman!

The seemingly provocative idea, “You are Brahman” (“You are God“) is clearly not telling you, the individual that you think you are, that you are the Divine. It is saying that “Only Brahman is” (“Only God is“).

How can you avoid misunderstanding statements about Truth, about Reality?

Statements from authentic scriptures and masters aren’t fodder for your mind. Don’t see them as concepts, knowledge, philosophy, or theology.

They are signposts, pointers for you to follow to your direct experience of what is being pointed to.

So, hearing that “You are Brahman“, you have to realize that it is a Mahavakya a great pointer to Truth. You don’t experience yourself as Brahman, and yet, the pointer points that you are. So, inquire who the “I” is, that you think you are.

Through this Self-inquiry – finding who you really are – experience what the masters are pointing. Here are three resources that can help guide you step-by-step to realize your true nature:

When you read a puzzling passage in a Master’s works or in an authentic scripture, and you find it confusing or incredulous, pause and consider this – it may not be a concept or a knowledge nugget for you to understand with your mind, rather, it may be a pointer to your own real nature.

Concepts are fodder for the mind. Pointers point to the heart of the heart, to the essence of what is. Staying with concepts keep you stuck in the realm of the mind. Following pointers to the Truth in your direct experience can set you free.
